Kraven Delayed until 2024!

Sony Pictures has made some significant release date shifts for its upcoming films, including “Kraven the Hunter” and “Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse.”

The delays come as dual union strikes disrupt the day-to-day business of Hollywood, and the SAG-AFTRA conflict makes it particularly difficult to open major fall movies without the participation of star talent. Aaron Taylor-Johnson’s anticipated Marvel outing “Kraven” is shifting to August 30, 2024, from a planned October 6 outing this year. The push to next Labor Day is vital, studio insiders said, as leading man Taylor-Johnson would need to engage in a worldwide press tour to open the visceral action project in just over two months.

“Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse,” the third film in the blockbuster Lord and Miller animated franchise, has been undated. It was meant to open March 29, 2024. Due to union’s work stoppage orders, the voice cast cannot complete dialogue recording in time for the spring opening, said a Sony source. A new date is expected in the coming weeks.

A planned sequel to “Ghostbusters: Afterlife,” the Paul Rudd vehicle which trapped over $200 million at the worldwide box office in 2021, has been pushed from its 2023 Christmas corridor (December 20) to Easter weekend next year (March 29, 2024).

A “Karate Kid” reboot has also been kicked from June 7, 2024, to December 13, 2024, and the Blumhouse project “They Listen,” is also now undated from a planned August 30, 2024, opening.

‘Kraven the Hunter’ Moves to Fall 2023

Sony’s in a bit of a weird place when it comes to their Spider-Verse. While they had major hits like the Venom films and Spider-Man: No Way Home, their recent Marvel release Morbius didn’t do so hot at the box office and was panned by both critics and fans alike. Their next Spider-Verse release was going to be Kraven the Hunter starring Aaron Taylor-Johnson in just a couple of months. However, the film’s release has been pushed back from January 13, 2023, to October 6, 2023.

This shouldn’t come as too much of a surprise as we were so close to Kraven’s release and barely knew anything about the film itself. Before this news, there was no sign of a first trailer, which was odd given the film’s star-studded cast. Along with Taylor-Johnson the film is starring West Side Story’s Ariana DeBose as the villain Calypso, Fear Street’s Fred Hechinger as Kraven’s brother and Spider-Man villain Chameleon, Thor: Love and Thunder’s Russell Crowe as Kraven’s father, and Levi Miller as a younger version of Kraven.

While there’s not much known about the film’s plot at this time, Kraven is one of the oldest Spider-Man villains and has been a part of some of the hero’s most popular storylines like “Kraven’s Last Hunt”. The character has even been a part of the super villain team The Sinister Six and has played a role in various Spider-Man TV shows like The Spectacular Spider-Man as well as video games like Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions. He’s psychologically one of the most fascinating characters as he’s a villain just hunting the famous Web-Head for the thrill of it.

Because of that it will be interesting to see what direction the film will take the character without Spider-Man around. It helps that Taylor-Johnson is no stranger to big comic book roles as he has played Kick Ass in the hero’s self-titled franchise and Quicksilver in Avengers: Age of Ultron. While Kraven the Hunter has flirted with the big screen before in various canceled projects, this will be the character’s official big screen debut.

Kraven the Hunter will be bringing his skills to theaters on October 6, 2023 which was Madame Webs original release date before it moved. This is Just in time for Spider-Man fans to design their own Kraven Halloween costume. Other films affected by this release swap include Sony’s Garfield animated film. While we wait for Kraven’s first big screen adventure, you can catch up on the Spider-Verse by streaming Morbius on Netflix now. Spider-Man: No Way Home – The More Fun Stuff Version is also still in theaters.

Aaron Taylor-Johnson Talks Possible Spider-Man Appearance In Kraven The Hunter

Kraven the Hunter star Aaron Taylor-Johnson discusses the chances of fighting the wall-crawler himself in Sony’s Spider-Man Universe.

Kraven the Hunter is one of the upcoming solo films set in Sony’s separate Spider-Man universe. Now, lead star Aaron Taylor-Johnson has addressed the possibility of seeing Kraven fight Spider-Man on the big screen.

Kraven is a Marvel Comics character who is known for coming into conflict with Spider-Man throughout almost all forms of media. It’s not confirmed if Spider-Man appears in Kraven the Hunter, but the film itself will show the human side of Kraven rather than the savage combat-prone character many are used to.

During an interview with Variety, Taylor-Johnson didn’t reveal much when asked about whether or not Kraven will fight Spider-Man. “There have been many comic books that have that, so the possibilites are definitely there,” he said before praising his co-star Ariana DeBose. The Kraven film is mainly about the titular character, so fans shouldn’t hold their breath when it comes to seeing the iconic Spider-Man. It’s also unclear which Spider-Man it would end up being. With Vulture’s appearance in Morbius, it literally leaves the door open for any character to appear in Sony’s Spider-Man Universe

Morbius wasn’t received well, so Sony is under some pressure to figure out what the next step is to get back on the fans’ good side when it comes to their villain stories. As a result, many have eyes on Kraven the Hunter and how it will perform. Right now, it’s unclear as to what will become of it, but there are many things that separate this film from its vampire counterpart.

One thing that sets this movie apart is that Kraven is a much more popular and highly requested character who many fans would love to see in comparison to the vampire menace. Kraven also has a much more grounded backstory that could Sony adapt in multiple ways. This character is also much easier for newer fans to gravitate towards.

It’s clear that a sinister six or villain team is being teased by these solo releases, but the question is if the payoff will be worth it. If Spider-Man never shows up after all these solo villain films, then what’s the point? It’s very nice to focus on smaller characters, but often times these villains work best when they are in the same story as the heroes everyone knows and loves.

Kraven the Hunter is scheduled to release in theaters on January 13, 2023.
